Gaeilge with Murray’s Flames: 6 Simple Irish Lessons You’ll Actually Use 🇮🇪🕯️

At Murray’s Flames, Irish culture is at the heart of everything we do—from our candle scents inspired by the wild Atlantic coast to the language that shaped our culture. That’s why "Gaeilge with Murray’s Flames" was created—a fun and easy way to sprinkle a bit of the Irish language into your daily life.

This 6-week mini-series first launched on our Instagram and Facebook pages, and now I’ve brought it together here in one place. Whether you’re a curious learner, a nostalgic soul, or just someone who loves a good “Sláinte!”, you’ll find something here that sticks.

🗓 Week 1: Basic Irish Greetings

Simple, everyday phrases to kick things off. If you know nothing else, start here.

  • Dia duit – Hello (DEE-ah gwit)

  • Slán – Bye (Slawn)

  • Sláinte – Cheers! (Slawn-cha)

➡️ Try this: Next time you’re with friends, raise a glass and say Sláinte!

💬 Week 2: Everyday Phrases

Easy phrases for introductions, chats, and saying “you’re welcome” like a local.

  • Cad is ainm duit? – What’s your name? (cod iss an-um ditch)

  • Is mise [Name] – I am [Name] (iss mish-eh...)

  • Tá mé go maith – I’m good (taw may guh mawh)

  • Ceart go leor! – Okay! (kyart guh lore)

  • Tá fáilte romhat – You’re welcome (taw fawl-cheh roh-it)

📌 Save these—they’ll carry you through any friendly conversation.

🟢 Week 3: How Are You?

This one’s all about emotions and moods—simple, honest Irish.

  • Conas atá tú? – How are you?

  • Tá áthas orm – I’m happy (taw aw-has urm)

  • Tá brón orm – I’m sad (taw brohn urm)

  • Tá tuirse orm – I’m tired (taw tir-sheh urm)

  • Tá ocras orm – I’m hungry (taw uk-rus urm)

  • Go hiontach! – Amazing! (guh hee-un-tukh)

  • Go dona – Not good (guh dun-uh)

💬 Leave a comment below—how are you today, as Gaeilge?

🏡 Week 4: Where Do You Live?

Learn how to talk about where you’re from. Perfect for Irish pride or small talk at the pub.

  • Cá bhfuil tú i do chónaí? – Where do you live? (kaw will too ih duh khoh-nee)

  • Tá mé i mo chónaí i [place] – I live in [place]

  • Is as [place] mé. – I’m from [place] (iss ass ___ may)

  • Slán abhaile! – Safe home! (slawn uh-wall-yeh)

📍 Bonus points if you comment your hometown as Gaeilge.

🌦 Week 5: Talking About the Weather

The most Irish topic ever. Learn how to comment on the rain properly.

  • Cén sórt aimsire atá ann? – What’s the weather like? (kenn su-ort am-sire a-taw ann)

  • Tá sé ag cur báistí – It’s raining

  • Tá an ghrian ag taitneamh – The sun is shining

  • Tá sé scamallach – It’s cloudy

  • Tá sé gaofar – It’s windy

  • Tá sé fuar/te – It’s cold/hot

🕯️ Pair this one with a cuppa and a candle by the window. Classic.

🫶 Week 6: Feelings & Compliments

We wrapped things up with kindness. These are feel-good phrases to keep.

  • Tá mé ar bís – I’m excited

  • Tá grá agam duit – I love you

  • Tá tú go hálainn – You’re beautiful

💬 Tag someone you care about and drop them a compliment in Irish.

Final Thoughts

Gaeilge doesn’t need to be hard to learn. It’s part of our culture, our humour, and our everyday life—and it pairs pretty well with a candlelit moment.
